A commission of inquiry into the Kasubi tomb inferno was yesterday sworn in at Kampala High Court by Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki, five months after the historic site was razed down by flames.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry will be headed by the Court of Appeal judge George Steven Engwau and is expected to hand in its findings after three months to the Minister of Gender and Social Development, Mr Gabriel Opio.

Ms Jane Mpagi, the director of gender and community development in the Ministry of Gender, who represented the minister, said the formation of the commission dragged on due to logistical constraints.

“It required going through the legal process like the Government Gazette that had not been fulfilled then. But now that everything is in place, including a budget to kick start its operations, it is beginning work immediately,” said Ms Mpagi.

Other members of the commission are Mr Augustine Omare Okurut, Mr Godfrey Lule, Ms Grace Akullo, Mr Cheborion Barishaki and Ms Florence Sewanyana.
